Bonding over Badminton
Who knew that the Hub Members could get so competitive!
The Social Committee organised some midwinter games and just like a warm fire in the middle of August, things heated up…competition got hot. Some people were roasted while others were on fire. Badminton has never seen such spark or chaos.
On a Monday, fuelled by the two-coffee habit everyone seems to have on the first day of the week, a group of Hub members pulled on their sneakers, tied up their hair and haphazardly formed teams of two, who became instant rivals. It was on. The Wimbledon of the Hub calendar year.
Scoring was a little wayward with first to 11 sometimes becoming first to whoever remembered to keep score. At one stage deuce was included in the rules and rallies continued for tense minutes until the winner was crowned.
We had Raymond CI from Theme 4 represent the Theme Leads and Joses from Theme 2 represent anyone who knew how to play. Carl showed everyone up with some precision racquet skills and high lobs, while Jade as an underdog won half her matches and looked like she might be a fierce contender for the trophy.
That’s right, there was a Hub Trophy in the form of a pot plant, polished and green. Half time oranges were also distributed, although the vitamin C and natural sugar hit was shunned by most who had winning in their eyes, and were not thinking of their stomachs.
Hub Badminton was a raging success and after a bit of exercise and more than a few laughs we may have to have a re-match another day. Congratulations to Zeshan from Theme 3 for taking home the coveted Hub Trophy pot plant as MVP.
Other Hub members for notable mention of skill: Zahra, Sam, Becca, Majid, Ella and Rex.
