Seminar Recap – Dr. Gary Feng
On the 24th of January 2025, the Hub had the outmost pleasure of hosting the seminar titled ‘Experiences, benefits, challenges and solutions of cover crops and soil amendments in agricultural system’ joined by Dr. Gary Feng from the USDA.
Dr. Gary Feng brings a multidisciplinary background to agricultural research, with academic training that includes a B.S. in soil chemistry, an M.S. in soil physics, and a Ph.D. in soil and water sciences. He is currently a Research Soil Scientist with the USDA-ARS Sustainable Agriculture Research Unit and serves as adjunct faculty at Mississippi State University. Before joining the USDA-ARS, Dr. Feng held positions at several institutions, including Oregon State University, the University of California at Riverside, Washington State University, and the Idaho State Department of Environmental Quality.
His expertise spans fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and modelling, covering a broad range of topics in sustainable agriculture. Dr. Feng integrates advanced technologies into his work such as remote sensing, spectrometry, drones, robotics, Veris systems, digital sensors, and decision support tools. He has organised 28 international workshops and symposia to advance discussion in his areas of research.
Over the course of his career, he has developed, adapted, or applied 13 different models focused on crop growth, erosion, hydrology, nutrient cycles, agrometeorology, and agroecosystem dynamics. With close to 50 invited talks delivered at research institutes and universities worldwide, we are proud to be among the institutions hosting Dr. Feng as a speaker.
