Event Recap – Blue and Green Croatia
On Wednesday 18 February 2026, we were pleased to host Associate Professor Marko Petek and Associate Professor Tomislav Karažija from the University of Zagreb, Croatia,
Presentation titled “Blue and Green Croatia”.
They introduced Croatia as a country shaped by two worlds:
- the “blue” Adriatic coast, with its Mediterranean climate and many islands with rich biodiversity and national parks.
- the “green” inland regions, home to rich soils, diverse crops, and strong agricultural traditions
From there, they highlighted the University of Zagreb and its Faculty of Agriculture, outlining the programmes, research areas, and facilities that support students and scientists working in agriculture and environmental fields.
Both speakers are plant nutritionists, and they shared insights from their research on, integrating science and tradition for resilient and sustainable food production in the era of climate change as well the horticulture and varieties of food that are grown throughout Croatia.
Throughout the talk, they emphasised how better understanding soils, fertilisers, and plant nutrition can help us grow healthier food while protecting the environment. The session ended with discussion about possible future collaborations, including student exchanges, joint research projects, and shared workshops.
“Blue and Green Croatia” offered an accessible and engaging look at how one country is working to balance productive agriculture with environmental care, and it opened the door to new international connections.
